The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in implementing replay technology.
Video review technology will make its debut at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.
Players will gain the right to contest specific calls from the official, mirroring the system already in operation at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.
This technology will be operational on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles matches.
This development comes just a season following the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which terminated the longstanding role of line judges.
What Can Be Reviewed?
Players will not be permitted to challenge the call of the ELC system, but they can request the official to re-examine other decisions, such as:
- Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
- If a ball made contact with an rival's racket or person during play.
- Possible interference end of a rally.
Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the number of reviews a player can initiate.
Case in Point
A recent case took place in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against Jack Draper.
The British player conceded it was a tough call for the official, but believed his opponent had "played the rules quite well."
The umpire watched a video and determined Draper was guilty of interference, granting the point to his opponent.
Broader Adoption
Video reviews are not exclusive to major tournaments. The system was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.
Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews implemented at every one of its events.
Other Changes
Another change at The Championships 2025 will be the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.
This addresses instances where spectators have occasionally been unsure if a ball was in or out.
In other news, with exactly a century of days to go until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have also announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
