The Australian skipper has taken over 300 dismissals in 71 five-day games with an average of 22.10.
The Australian selection chief Bailey has declared that skipper Cummins will have a crucial role in the forthcoming historic rivalry.
There were concerns that Cummins might sit out due to a stress fracture in his back that was still troubling him.
Initial reports from team management suggested no final decision had been made regarding his involvement, with the Test matches scheduled to begin on November 21 in the WACA.
He revealed that the captain is progressing and was "optimistic" about the likelihood of taking part.
"We know that time is getting short and multiple considerations involved, aside from the back issue, but additional elements," Bailey remarked.
"It's positive. There's strong faith that he will feature a significant role. Hopefully it's the first Test. Otherwise, we'll adjust."
Past Concerns
He was sidelined the ODI and T20 games against India and New Zealand recently after scans revealed a lower back issue.
He has a history of spinal problems, with flare-ups in multiple past seasons causing him to miss multiple domestic campaigns in a short span.
He emphasized he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his recovery plan to make the squad for the series.
The selector indicated that there was no confirmation if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his recovery but conceded it was "pressing" for him to be fit for the first Test.
Backup Options
Should Cummins not be fit, ex-skipper Smith will lead the side.
Versatile player Green was excluded lately from the national team for their one-day international series against India as a safety move because of discomfort in his torso.
The selector characterized it as a "small issue and mentioned that he'll feature in the state-level matches, so will be "ideally positioned to resume bowling."
"Extensive planning has gone into building out the plan for him to participate for the opening match as an dual-role player," the selector detailed.
"His involvement was limited to the initial matches anyway. The way he swings the bat in limited-overs, if it causes any delay for a short period, we opted to adopt a safer strategy."
